Cultural Troupes in Ghana

Cultural troupes in Ghana, staging dances and rhythms from various regions of Ghana and beyond, are forming an integral part of a cultural policy aiming at inter-ethnic co-operation through cultural interchange.

More or less neglected by most ethnomusicologists, who are still chasing after "authenticity" in African Music, numerous cultural troupes performing in Ghana's capital city Accra. Two of those ensembles which I meat during my research on "Modernity's traditional Music" in Ghana are portrayed here.

The Nyame Adom Dance Ensemble has been founded by Samuel Semenu in 1990 is a classic example of a Ghanaian cultural troupe.

Hewale Sounds (represented here through an external link) has released various records of its thrilling compositions and re-arrangements.

Tobias Robert Klein is lecturing music at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg/Germany and is an Associate Member of the International Centre for African Music and Dance, University of Ghana/Legon.
